About us

You have Flemish ancestry and would like to retrace your ancestors ? Maybe you are a bit curious to discover how and where your ancestors lived in Flanders or Brussels. We can help you with your research.

As a non-profit cultural-heritage organisation, supported by the Flemish and Brussels governments, Familiekunde Vlaanderen is specialised in Flemish family history and genealogy.

Familiekunde Vlaanderen – in short “FV” - is driven by hundreds of specialised volunteers across Flanders and Brussels. We give advice (English) in state and city archives and in the FV-documentation centres (Dutch). Our volunteers organize courses (Dutch) on how to research your family history. Each year, we present a national genealogical congress and many other regional genealogical meetings in Flanders and Brussels. Our members publish a continuous flow of genealogical books and articles, for example in our magazine Vlaamse Stam (Dutch).

Last but not least, we continue to expand our genealogical databases, which already contain millions of persons who lived in Flanders and Brussels during the past six centuries. If you are looking for genealogical sources or deceased persons in Flanders or Brussels, you can consult our digital databases (Dutch) or visit one of our documentation centres.

Familiekunde Vlaanderen safeguards the largest collection of genealogical publications and databases in Flanders. In our documentation centres, you can find for example funeral and mourning cards, family archives, lists of voters, and many other documents about family history in Flanders and Flemish local history.

Wat doen we?

If you are not in the possibility to carry out the research yourself in our documentation centres, we can search for an answer on your specific genealogical questions. For more information on genealogical research by the volunteers of Familiekunde Vlaanderen, please consult our Advice (English) page.

Familiekunde Vlaanderen encourages the research of family history in Flanders and Brussels. For this reason, we launched the website www.familiegeschiedenis.be (Dutch) in October 2012. This website offers you a digital guide (in Dutch) to help you find your ancestors and to reconstruct your family history.

In cooperation with many other organisations, such as the Catholic University of Leuven or the City of Antwerp, we initiated a series of international projects of which the DNA-project (English) and the Red Star Line-project (English) are amongst the most successful.

We wish you an interesting journey and we are glad to help you find your Flemish roots !
